GENERAL COMMENTS
"This book has grown from the exhibition organized by the Armenian Institute at the Brunei Gallery, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, May 1 to July 24, 2010. Curated by Susan Pattie and Gagik Stepan-Sarkissian."
"This book is part of an oral history project among Armenians living in Britain carried out by the Armenian Institute. It shows that material objects and photographs can do more than simply illustrate words and are themselves full of life. The objects, treasured because of their significance within families, can also become the focus of community events and learning about a group's history. The Armenian Institute organized an exhibition of these pieces to give another dimenstion to the display of Osman Köker's brilliant 'My Dear Brother: Armenians in Turkey 100 Years Ago.' The englarged postcards that Köker chose from the collection of Orlando Carlo Calumeno depict everyday life among Armenians in the Ottoman Empire, showing their integration and contributions in the wider society. The objects, displayed on a separate floor, brought their original owners into focus, giving an added immediacy to the postcards. We hope that other groups, whether immigrant or native, neighbourhood, religious-based or any other might find this a very potent way of bringing a group's heritage to life."
"The exhibition and book of Treasured Objects were made possible by the generous support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, SOAS and the Benlian Trust."
