GENERAL COMMENTS
Fr. Dr. Tecleab (also written as Tekleab) Mengisteab (58) is an Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo priest and physician. Until his arrest on November 19, 2004, he has been one of the prominent leaders of the Sunday School of the "Mekane Hiywet Medhane Alem Church of Asmara, adjacent to the largest hospital in the city former Itege Menen (the wife of the late emperor Haile Selassie) and current Orota hospital.
This book is published in Trinton, New Jersey (USA) by his followers and followers of the late patriarch Abune Antonios. The widow of Fr. Dr. Tecleab lives in Dallas with their children. The forward of this book, actually the first concordance of it's kind written by a Tewahdo priest, is written by his wife, Mrs. Wube Solomon.
Dr. Tecleab was arrested on the same day together with other prominent Orthodox Tewahdo leaders:
2. Fr. Dr. Fitsum (also Futsum) Ghebrengus, an Orthodox Tewahdo priest and a psychiatrist (I met him in London during his study and later in Asmara, HY),
3. Fr. Ghebremedhin Ghebregiorgis.
The people loved these leaders. The attendance of their church services were so fully packed that they had to organize several services in the weekends and during the week. Besides they were beloved doctors. Dr. Tecleab, himself a diabetic patient did his advanced study in Israel. Dr. Fitsum, the only psychiatrist during his arrest, did his advanced study in Pakistan, Spain and the UK.
All three were arrested on the same day. They have been incommunicado ever since.
** On the day of their arrest, on November 19, 2004, both Dr. Tecleab and Dr. Fitsum went to a conference organized by the Eritrean Ministry of Health to present the result of their research. Security forces arrested them at the venue of the conference. On the same day, the third one, Fr. Ghebremedhin Ghebregiorgis was arrested.
** The late Abune Antonios, the third legitimate patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church (ErOTC), protested against the continuous intervention of the Eritrean Government in the affairs of the church and the arrest of Eritreans without due process of law in general, and the arrest of these three in particular. Six month later the patriarch was dethroned and thrown into jail. After 16 years imprisonment the patriarch died on February 9, 2022.
