CONTENT DESCRIPTION
A short history of Copts and the Coptic Church in Egypt. The author tells the story of the Copts throughout twenty centuries, as the title itself suggests.

GENERAL COMMENTS
Elham Khalil emphasizes the fact that Christians in Egypt have always been under a foreign rule and focuses on the issue of Arab/Islamic conquest of Egypt in the seventh century. She raises a question of how the Islamization of Egypt happened and how this changed the history of the country. Khalil points out that under Greek, Roman and Byzantine rule Egypt was Christian, but with the Arab conquest it gradually lost its Christian identity and its indigenous language (i.e. Coptic). The author stresses the fact that there is still strong discrimination of the Copts in Egypt.
