CONTENT DESCRIPTION
Dutch translation of the Coptic Prayer Book of the Hours. The Agpeya (or Agbeya) is the book of the seven Coptic canonical prayers.
GENERAL COMMENTS
Most of the illustration in the book reflects the Neo-Coptic style, which emerged in the second half of the twentieth century (established by Isaac Fanous) and now continues to develop in diaspora. The style is characterized by a high level of abstraction (as Orthodox iconography in general) which helps the viewer/worshiper focus on the beauty of the spiritual realm, rather than the beauty that can been seen through our human eyes. The name of the artist is not mentioned, but we can see the signature in Coptic on most of these images which reads "ϫⲉⲣϫⲓⲥ" ("Gerges").
This Agpeya is the third edition published by the Coptic Church in the Netherlands.
